~~Chapter 1~~
“you’re looking at the most beautiful,
most lovable Avian the world could offer, it’s the one and only! Yours truly,
Skye!!”
The
lady she was talking to didn’t seem to care. She just glanced at the boy that
sat next to Skye, and made a ‘who the heck is this?’ look.
“And
this guy is the smartest kid in town. The Dragonkin of the hour, my best
friend, Rexyyyy!” Sky said, doing jazz hands at him.
“It
is just Rex,” he said. They were both sitting in a small dark room, with a
table between them and the scary lady. A single light shined in the middle of a
room. just enough to make the whole room visible, but just barely.
“don’t
worry mean lady, he’s just a bit shy,” Skye said, “ooh! That reminds me of the
time we- “.
The
Lady slammed her fist to the table, and smoke started to rise from her hands. The
room went silent. Rex’s face was whiter than snow, his body stiffer than a
statue. The loud bang made Skye tuck her wings close, and not a sound came out
of her after that.
“This isn’t an audition kid!” the mean lady said. “My name is sheriff Psyche,
and you’re here is because you’re under arrest!”
“More
like sheriff Psycho” Skye whispered to Rex, nudging his arm. But it looked like
the sheriff heard her, as her eyes were staring dead at Skye, like she was
about to use laser vision to kill her, right then and there.
Rex
looked like he ate poison for breakfast. As his skin changed color to green,
then back to being pale again. It’s like his brain doesn’t know what to feel
right now.
“No!
no, please!” Rex said “I-I can’t go to jail. It was an accident, I got my spark
just a few days ago. I’m still learning to use them right” his voice trembled,
he was practically begging the sheriff for some sort of mercy. But it was all
for nothing. The sheriff just scoffed at him.
“I’ve never seen a Dragonkin this pathetic” the sheriff then laughed,
making Rex wrap his tail around his own body and hold the end of it.
Rex
has always been called pathetic and weak by all the people around him. They
said that he was ‘barely a Dragonkin’, even his parents. Skye, her big brother
Pheonix, and their mom Alyssa are the only ones who are nice to him and loved
him for who he is.
Seeing
the depressed look on Rex’s face made Skye want to chop the head of whoever
made him sad. She knew Rex was not the best at being brave,
but he’s great at other things. Like
being smart, and fun, and a pain in the bum to argue against.
“Listen
here, Sheriff Psycho!” Skye said as she stood up to look somewhat more menacing.
“I don’t care what you think of Rexy here, but I imagined you also had a hard
time controlling your fire powers when it first came around. So, stop being
mean at him and just let us go home already”. The horns on the Sheriff’s head went
ablaze, her face was boiling.
“I know how our powers work little weasels,” said the Sheriff mockingly.
“I know it needs time for you to get used to it. "BUT I DIDN’T SET THE TOWN’S
AQUAFER ON FIRE, DID I?”
Rex
held his tail tighter, trying to hold back tears. Skye put one wing over him
and pat his shoulder. He kept his head down, then gave Skye a wounded smile.
“Anyway,” the Sheriff said. “you’re not going to jail, you’re still sixteen.
So, someone is going to come to get you.”
The
door slid open, revealing someone who was standing on the other side. He has
massive red-copper wings with golden tips and dark red hair. And strangely a
tail.
It was Pheonix, and right behind him
was Alyssa.
“Thank
goodness you’re both okay,” Alyssa said, putting her arms and wings around them
Skye and Rex. “I was worried sick! Rex are you alright? Let me see.” Alyssa
scanned Rex all over, checking every patch of skin and scales for burn marks or
injuries.
“I’m
alright Mo-I mean Aunt Alyssa,” Rex whispered, she brushed his head gently.
Then gave him a sympathetic smile. “good” Alyssa then stood up straight and
crossed her arms. She looked at them dead in the eyes “THEN WHAT THE FU-,”
Pheonix suddenly put his hand on Alyssa’s mouth. Muffling what she was
about to say, “Whoa mom! Boundaries.” Pheonix said, looking like he just dodged
an arrow.
“Sorry,”
Alyssa said. She took a deep breath and started reciting her calming mantra. Usually,
when that happened, it meant that Pheonix, Rex, or Skye is in big trouble. Or
in this case, Rex and Skye. “we’ll have that ‘conversation’ back home” she then
walked to the other side of the room to chat with Sheriff Psyche.
Pheonix
then bolted to them and sat on top of the table, his face bedazzled. “you guys
torched The Aquafer? Tell me everything! And why didn’t you invite me?” his
face frowned when he asked the last bit.
“I
was helping Rexy practice his spark, and,” Skye said
“You know what? A magician never
reveals his secrets.” Skye gave Pheonix a mischievous grin, knowing that this
will annoy Pheonix to the core.
“Not
cool Skye,” Pheonix said, crossing his arms and looking away. “Not cool.”
“Why am did suddenly become the magician?” Rex asked
“Because you did the impossible” Skye
answered, “and I wasn’t the one doing it, I was just a spectator.” She leaned
back and put her hands behind her head. While Rex was trying not to look like he
was dying.
Not
long after that Alyssa took them out of the Enforcer station. they usually fly
home, but Rex was out of spark so he can’t fly, plus he was ravenous. So, they
have to stop to find something to eat.
Alyssa
needed to go back to work. So, they had to split up, but not before she made
all of them promise to be back home before dark.
The
trio went to Magnus’s Tavern. Rex’s favorite place to eat. Both Rex and Pheonix
loved this place. The same thing can’t be said for Skye. She could never eat
anything in here. Skye and spicy food, it’s like heaven and hell. But she
wasn’t that hungry anyway. And if this would cheer up Rex, she’d be happy to do
it anytime.
They
sat at a table next to a window. Pheonix went to place their orders. Although
Skye didn’t order anything. The tavern was packed. Most of the customers there
were Dragonkins. The descendants of dragons love to feel a burn from their
food, no surprise there.
The
sun dwindled to its setting point. Skye could see it clearly through the
window. The sky was beautiful. Rays of orange light bounced off the clouds. The
trees danced to the rhythm of the wind. The pigeons were flying back to their
nests, making way for bats to come out later.
On
the other side of the table, Rex was also looking out the window. His eyes were
damp, and his eyebrows were slightly pushed together.
“I hope we could get home before dark.” Rex said, “I don’t want to make
Aunt Alyssa madder than she already is.” Skye leaned in closer to Rex, and she clutched
one of his arms.
“You
know she’d be happy if you called her ‘mom’” Skye said, “I know I would”.
“I
know,” Rex said, looking down at the table. “But she’s your mom, not mine”
Then a whole cooked chicken slid on the
table and a plate of sandwiches.
“who’s
hungry?” Pheonix said, he sat down next to Skye and was ready to gobble up the sandwiches
he ordered.
“Skye
is right though, Rex,” Pheonix said, with a mouthful. “you’ve been in our lives
for as long as I can remember, and you practically live with us.” Pheonix
paused to add more hot sauce to his sandwich, then he passed it to Rex. “Your
dad barely ever comes home. And when he does, he’d be mean and keep yelling at
you. And your mom was, -ow! What?”
Skye
kicked his leg to get him to shut up. Rex’s mother was killed in a raid when he
was two years old. So Pheonix talking about her would only make Rex feel worse.
“My
point is, Alyssa, is ‘in essence’ your mother too,” Pheonix said, finishing up
his sandwich. Rex was already halfway to the chicken.
“Alright
Pheonix, shut up,” sky said. “Just finish your food so we could go home. And
Rexy, how about we continue working on our scrapbook when we got home?”
Rex’s
face lit up and nodded violently. He devoured the rest of his chicken in
seconds. After they’ve all finished their meal, they headed home. The sun was
already gone by that point. They expect Alyssa to be waiting for them with smoke
coming out of her ears. To their surprise when they got home, Alyssa wasn’t
home yet.
